Description:

Duties will consist of the intern providing front line information, orientation, and interpretive services for visitors in the day-to-day operation of the park, both at the Visitor Centers and at various locations throughout the park. The intern will work with the IIC mentor and interpretive park rangers to develop and present a variety of programs and tours.

Responsibilities:

  • Pass a federal background investigation to receive keys, radios and NPS computer access.
  • Attend the 2-week interpretation/park operations training program (or equivalent on the job training) at the beginning of the season.
  • Provide Junior Ranger programs and porch talks.
  • Provide informal interpretation, orientation, and safety information to visitors regarding park resources.
  • Develop and deliver a formal interpretive cave tour, a guided hike, and a porch talk.
  • Perform trail roves while providing visitor information and to perform preventative search and rescue activities (PSAR).
  • Helps operate a busy visitor center desk, welcoming visitors and accurately answering their questions about the park and its operations.
  • There may also be opportunities to participate in search and rescue training and assist with search and rescue operations and emergency litter carry-out if needed.
  • Visitor Center Information Desk duties will include answering questions, providing directions, recommending hiking trails, interacting with Junior Rangers, using a cash register, selling bookstore items, processing lost and found items, operating a 2-way radio, telephone, and performing other duties as necessary.

Qualifications:

  • Must be age 18+
  • Must be a U.S. citizen
  • Must have a valid driver’s license
  • Incoming, current, or recent SUU student preferred

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Strong communication and public speaking skills.
  • Interest in education, interpretation, natural resources, or public service.
  • Courteous and professional in high-traffic or visitor-facing settings.
  • Ability to research, organize, and share information clearly and creatively.
  • Comfortable working independently and as part of a team.
  • Basic computer and office skills; experience with social media or design tools a plus.

Education: High school diploma or equivalent required; college coursework in education, Communications, or natural/cultural resource fields preferred.

Schedule: Tuesday through Saturday - 8hrs/day
